History

The British School in Tokyo (hereinafter referred to as BST) was set up as a charitable trust in 1988 by a group of parents who wished their children to have a British style education in Tokyo. The School was opened in 1989 on a site in Shibuya, central Tokyo. In the early years of the School, the children were from ages 5 to 10 and the majority were British. But the school has continued to grow, extended its buildings, opened the Showa campus at Sendagaya, and now the school has over 1000 students of over 65 nationalities, 300 from ages 3 to 7 on the Shibuya campus and 700 from ages 8 to 18 on the Showa campus.

BST is also to open a new Primary School campus within the prestigious Toranamon – Azabudai mixed-use urban development. The new campus with its outstanding facilities is scheduled to open in September 2023 with an initial 700 children from Nursery to Year 6 and will replace the current facilities for Primary children at Shibuya and Showa.

Learning

The school follows Early Years Curriculum from England pitched high and designed to give a balanced educational experience covering academic challenge, creative and sporting subjects where children’s views and interests are respected, and students learn through a carefully planned blend of both teacher-led and independent play-based activities set up across our indoor and outdoor learning environments. The children enjoy a safe, happy and secure environment whilst taking risks, thinking critically, and exploring through play to develop into enthusiastic and independent learners.

BST is very well resourced and staff use a wide range of teaching styles and media to ensure pace, interest and progress are maintained

Culture

Core to BST’s ethos is a desire for their students to become truly internationally minded to acquire the personal and social intercultural competencies and dispositions that will allow them to thrive and flourish wherever in the world they find themselves.
