Founded in 1902, The American School in Japan (hereinafter referred to as ASIJ) has been the leading international school that offers an American-style college preparatory education for the children of international families. The storied school with over 115 years of history embarked on its journey from rented rooms in the Kanda YMCA building. And it kept outgrowing the facilities, opened the Early Learning Center in Roppongi in 2004, and now ASIJ has entered the latest chapter of its life with a new mission and strategic vision for the future.

Students spend the elementary school, the middle school and the high school years on Chofu Campus where they experience a great deal of growth and the brain both sprouts new dendrites and prunes those that are not used. Through their extended campus program and classroom-without-walls concept, students explore unique settings in the mountains, lake regions, cities and coastlines of Japan. and their trips provide students with memorable experiences that make the curriculum come alive through each trip's diverse activities. And because of these tripes, students develop stronger bonds and friendships both with their classmates and their teacher chaperons and, of course, have a lot of fun while they learn.

The school offers a standards-based curriculum culminating in an American high school diploma. ASIJ’s program develops the necessary skills for a student to be successful in their future academic endeavors, including in Advanced Placement courses and other advanced topic courses.
In elementary school, the use of iPads for learning is a key component of their instructional program. Their digital citizenship program focuses on building students’ skills so they know how to engage online in a safe, honest, responsible, and respectful manner.
